    Marriage registration in the Republic of Lithuania. Travel and wedding arrangements

    Marriage with a citizen of Lithuania

    In Lithuania, marriage can be concluded in a civil manner (i.e., at a civil registry office or at another place of your choice) or in a church (according to the customs of the denominations recognized in Lithuania). According to the Law of the Republic of Lithuania on Religious Communities and Societies, the state recognizes the following traditional and existing religious communities and societies in Lithuania: Roman Catholic, Greek Catholic, Evangelical Lutheran, Evangelical Reformed, Orthodox (Orthodox), Old Believer, Jewish, Sunni Muslim, and Karaite.

    Conclusion of marriage in a civil manner in Lithuania:

    To conclude a marriage, you must apply to the civil registry office at your place of residence in Lithuania and personally submit the following documents:
    - an application (filled out on site);
    - birth certificates;
    - passports (or other identity documents);
    - if you are divorced, a certificate of divorce;
    - a foreign national must additionally submit documents issued by the authority of their country confirming that there are no obstacles to their marriage (that they are not married or are divorced).

    Please clarify the full list of documents required for marriage in advance with the employees of the institutions registering marriages in Lithuania.

    Documents issued in another country (except for the passport) must have an Apostille (Apostille), be translated into Lithuanian, and the translation must be notarized.
    In the Republic of Belarus, the Apostille is affixed by:
    - the Ministry of Justice (Minsk, Kollektornaya St., 10, office 508) — on documents issued by justice and court authorities;
    - the Ministry of Education, Department of Quality Control of Education (Minsk, Kozlova St., 28) — on documents issued by subordinate educational institutions;
    - the Department of Archives and Record Keeping of the Ministry of Justice (Minsk, Kollektornaya St., 10) — on documents issued by republican archival institutions;
    - the Main Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Minsk, K. Marx St., 37a) — on all other types of documents.
    Thus, the affixing of the Apostille on documents issued by official bodies of the Republic of Belarus and intended for use outside the Republic of Belarus, including in Lithuania, is carried out on the territory of the Republic of Belarus.
    The period for affixing the Apostille in the Republic of Belarus is 1 day from the date of submission of the document, and if a special check, request for documents and (or) information from other state bodies or organizations is required, it is 15 days.

    Citizens of the Republic of Belarus, foreign citizens, and stateless persons can apply for an Apostille through the consular section of the embassy.
    If the Apostille is issued through the embassy, taking into account the need to send documents to the Republic of Belarus and back, the total period is about 2 months.
    To apply for an Apostille through the embassy, you must attach the following to the application:

    1. An official document duly executed, on which the Apostille must be affixed
    2. A receipt for payment of the consular fee

    The cost of affixing the Apostille is 35 euros.

    Marriage in Lithuania is registered no earlier than one month from the date of submission of the application. The wedding ceremony can take place in the premises of the civil registry office or in another place designated by the local authority in Lithuania, and the ceremony is conducted in the Lithuanian language.

    Marriages concluded in the manner established by the church (denominations) in Lithuania:

    Regarding the conclusion of marriage, you must contact your priest, with whom you will discuss the preparation for the wedding and the ceremony itself, the time of its organization. Marriages concluded in the manner established by the churches (denominations) must be registered, i.e., registered with the civil registry office at the place of residence. Regarding the registration of the marriage, it is best to apply within 10 calendar days after the conclusion of the marriage, otherwise, the date of registration of the marriage will differ from the date of the marriage. However, a religious marriage cannot be recognized in the Republic of Belarus.

    After concluding a marriage, you can submit documents to the migration service for obtaining a temporary residence permit in Lithuania.

    After registering a marriage in the Republic of Lithuania and for its recognition in the territory of the Republic of Belarus, it is necessary to affix the stamp "Apostille" on the original "marriage certificate" in Lithuania, and in Belarus, translate the "certificate" into Russian or Belarusian and have it notarized. The notarized copy and the original with the stamp "Apostille" affixed to it are submitted to the registry office at your place of registration.

    To conclude a marriage in Lithuania, your stay must be legal. Before leaving, you must obtain the type of visa corresponding to the purpose of stay abroad at the Lithuanian representation in the Republic of Belarus. As a rule, this is a short-term Schengen visa (C). A foreign national with a short-term visa can arrive and stay for the period specified in the visa, but not more than 3 months within six months from the first day of arrival in the Schengen area.
