The Czech Republic. Marriage. Arranging and holding a wedding ceremony.

Marrying a citizen of the Czech Republic

In order to register a marriage in the Czech Republic, you must first contact the Czech civil registry office and clarify the full list of documents required for marriage.

The standard documents are as follows:

    1. Application form for the civil registry office.
    2. Passport (main page with photo + registration + page on marital status).
    3. Birth certificates.
    4. Certificate of marital status (issued by the civil registry office at the place of registration) - with the stamp of the Ministry of Justice (regional office) (the document must not be older than 6 months from the date of issue).
    5. Divorce certificate (if previously married).
    6. Death certificate (for a widow or widower).
    7. A document showing your place of residence - in some Czech matriculation offices (administrative body, similar to our civil registry offices and passport offices), a copy of the page of the passport with the registration stamp is sufficient. (You may need a certificate from the passport office stating that a certain citizen resides at a certain address).

All of this, except for the passport, must be translated into Czech with notarized certification. However, always check with the marriage registration office for information on document legalization.

Also a confirmation from the Czech Republic police on legal stay in the country. (The document is issued upon arrival and must not be older than 7 days at the time of the wedding). For citizens of all countries except the EU.

Within three days after registration, you must report your new civil status to the foreign police with your spouse. MANDATORY!

Changing your surname during this period is at your discretion. You can keep your old surname, and then change your surname after six months when you receive the blue passport.

The certificate is pasted into the foreign police for 2 months. You cannot travel around Europe with this certificate. The passport with temporary stay for two years is issued after six months of checks and interviews. With it, you are free to move around the EU. And with the certificate, you need to be renewed every two months at your place of residence with your spouse.

In the Czech Republic, it is possible to marry a couple, both of whom are Belarusians.

Documents issued in Belarus by newlyweds do not need to be legalized for marriage registration in the Czech Republic. However, always check with the marriage registration office for information on document legalization.

The newlyweds must arrive in the Czech Republic 3 working days before the ceremony, as on the Monday or Wednesday preceding the wedding, in the morning, it is necessary to visit 2 authorities accompanied by a wedding coordinator:

    • the Foreign Police (to obtain confirmation from the Czech Republic Police about legal residence in the country. The document is issued upon arrival and must be no older than 7 days at the time of marriage).
    • and the Registry Office (it is necessary to remember that there are public holidays in the Czech Republic – days when government offices are closed).

If more extensive preparation is needed, such as choosing wedding attire to your liking, accessories, choosing a restaurant and selecting a menu, meeting with stylists, etc. – we recommend arriving in the Czech Republic a little earlier – 4-5 days before the ceremony.

Calls and written inquiries are temporarily not accepted.
