Foreign citizens and stateless persons (hereinafter referred to as foreigners) enjoy rights and bear obligations in marriage and family relations on an equal footing with citizens of the Republic of Belarus (unless otherwise provided by legislative acts and international treaties of the Republic of Belarus).
Marriage is a voluntary union of a man and a woman, which is concluded in the manner, on the terms and in compliance with the requirements determined by the law, aimed at creating a family and entails mutual rights and obligations for the parties.
Cohabitation (living together), regardless of its duration, does not entail legal consequences under the legislation of the Republic of Belarus.
A marriage is illegal if it is concluded without the intention of both spouses to create a family, but to achieve any benefits arising from the fact of marriage registration, for example, in order to obtain a temporary or permanent residence permit. Such a marriage is declared invalid, and the foreigner will be refused a temporary or permanent residence permit (or it will be annulled).
