How to obtain and apply for a residence permit or permanent residence in the Czech Republic if you want to immigrate
The Czech Republic is a country that is most attractive for the immigration of skilled workers and the middle class. The Czech Republic is currently one of those countries where you can immigrate quickly and without significant psychological and financial costs.
The standard grounds for obtaining a residence permit in the Czech Republic are:
- Family reunification. You can reunite with your family in the Czech Republic:
- with a citizen of the Czech Republic.
- with a person residing in the territory of the Czech Republic on the basis of POVOLENI k trvalemu POBYTU, that is, having a permanent place of residence in the Czech Republic.
- with a person residing in the territory of the Czech Republic on the basis of POVOLENI k dlouhodobemu POBYTU, that is, having a residence permit in the Czech Republic - abbreviated as residence permit in the Czech Republic.
- with a family member receiving the first visa to the Czech Republic (visa with the first letter D in the code) on the basis of one of the following: registering a company in the Czech Republic, running a private business in the Czech Republic, working for a public or private organization in the Czech Republic.
- Student visa. A student visa can be obtained by young people under 25 years of age, without a family. The main advantages are low cost of registration and a high percentage of obtaining a visa. But with a student visa, you can only get a permanent place of residence after 10 years of continuous residence in the Czech Republic. And if you are not studying, it will be very problematic to extend the visa.
- Work visa. This option often requires an invitation from a Czech employer. Due to the shortage of highly qualified personnel in the Czech Republic, the likelihood of obtaining a work visa is very high. This visa allows you to get a job without unnecessary difficulties, get a permanent residence permit after just 2.5 years, and does not require proof of funds. But with this visa, you will be practically deprived of the opportunity to change jobs, because you will depend on the employer who gave you the invitation. A work visa will not allow you to bring your family to the Czech Republic for several years.
- With an individual entrepreneur's license. This visa not only provides the opportunity to engage in small business, but also allows foreigners to get a job as a simple employee. An individual entrepreneur will be able to bring their family right away. Permanent residence can be obtained after 5 years.
When using this method of immigration to the Czech Republic, you should take into account some mandatory points:
- the need to pay taxes even if there is no profit;
- payment of health insurance for at least six months in advance;
- liability to all your creditors;
- registration with the tax office, trade register, and social security fund.
- Company registration. This is the most common option for immigrating to the Czech Republic. The cost of registering a company in the Czech Republic is low, but it will immediately allow you to move legally and bring your family to Europe. Having a company in the Czech Republic, you automatically get the opportunity to organize your own business, get a mortgage when buying Czech real estate. Permanent residence can be obtained in 5 years.
Residence permit in the Czech Republic provides the following rights:
- Rights that arise from international agreements.

Permanent residence in the Czech Republic
Persons who have lived in the country for a specified period (an average of five years) with a residence permit can obtain permanent resident status. By the way, this minimum period can be halved if you marry a citizen of the Czech Republic.
Czech resident status is very convenient. After all, it gives exactly the same rights as citizens of the country. Except for the ability to vote in elections to the authorities, and you do not need to renounce your citizenship of your home country.
In some cases, Czech legislation allows you to obtain permanent residence bypassing temporary residence in the following cases:
- the applicant's minor children are citizens of the Czech Republic;
- the applicant is Czech by nationality and can prove it;
- the state has its own, separate interest in granting the applicant permanent residence;
- the applicant has passed the seventy-year mark and is a close relative of a citizen of the country.
How to get citizenship in the Czech Republic?
It is possible to obtain the status of a citizen of the Czech Republic in various ways. However, generally, citizenship in the Czech Republic, as in many other EU countries, is strongly tied to nationality. That is, if a person is related by blood to a subject of the country. Anyone born to a Czech citizen is considered a subject of the country. This must be officially confirmed. For example, unmarried parents submit a joint application to recognize their child as a citizen of the country.
The legislation provides for the possibility of "naturalization". An application for citizenship can be submitted after five years of residence in the country as a resident (permanent residence). At the same time, knowledge of the Czech language and renunciation of previous citizenship are required.
