Traveling to the USA: What You Need to Know About Tourism
Personal safety rules while vacationing in the USA
Since February 1, 2018, the US Embassy in Minsk has been accepting applications from citizens of the Republic of Belarus, as well as foreigners residing in Belarus, for visas of all non-immigrant categories (except for K1 visa (fiancé/fiancée visa) and K3 visa (spouse of a US citizen visa), which will continue to be issued at the US Embassy in Warsaw).
The policy for entering the United States is significantly different from that of European countries, as the visa indicates not the period of stay in the United States, but the period of entry!!! The migration officer at the border specifies the period of stay in the United States. And even if the visa has tourist status, the migration officer can allow a stay in the United States of up to 6 months. In addition, even with an already open visa, the migration officer at the border can ask a person a number of questions and, if suspicious of the arriving person, refuse entry into the country.
For a tourist visa (B-2), a thorough letter is required that explains the essence and purpose of the candidate's trip to the United States, and also confirms that the relationship between the candidate and the host party is appropriate.
A participant in a business or tourist trip to the United States for a visa must provide the following package of documents that reflects your financial and family well-being:
- Passport (valid 6 months after the end of the trip).
- Old passports with visas.
- Certificate from work on company letterhead with signature and stamp indicating average monthly income, length of service, position.
- Two color photographs measuring 5x5 IN ELECTRONIC FORM!!! without corners, frames or ovals, on a white or light background; the head should be in the center of the frame. The dimensions of the head in the photo (from the top of the head to the chin) are 2.5-3.5 cm; the eyes should be at a level of 2.8 to 3.5 cm from the bottom edge of the photo. Photos must be provided by all applicants, including children listed in their parents' passports.
- Answers to questions on the American questionnaire, form DS-156. Men aged 16 to 45 additionally fill out form DS-157.
In addition, it is desirable, but not necessary, to submit photocopies of the following documents:
For participants in a tourist trip:
- Photocopy of all passport pages
Advertising brochures of the company where you work, a letter with a brief description of the activities of your company, year of establishment, etc. If you are a founder or co-founder of the company, provide the constituent documents, certificate of registration, license, accounts, and other materials confirming the stable economic position of your company.
For students or schoolchildren, it is necessary to provide a certificate from the educational institution.

Any other documents at your discretion confirming the above.
For participants in a business trip:
In addition to the above, you must provide an invitation from your partner, contracts with him or her, or other documents at your discretion confirming business relations and explaining the purpose of your trip.
In case of participation in exhibitions, seminars, symposia, it is necessary to provide registration or a letter from the organizing committee confirming your participation.
It is in your interest to present the most complete set of documents.
If you come to the US Embassy for an interview on your own, you must have all the above-mentioned documents in ORIGINAL.
According to statistics, today visa refusals are isolated cases, and 9 out of 10 people applying for a visa receive it.
The most common reasons for refusals:
- "clean passport" - that is, the absence of any foreign trips.
- providing knowingly false information to the embassy.
- violation of the period of stay in the USA on previous trips in case of applying for a visa again. In case of a tourist trip, it is not recommended to stay in the USA for more than one month.
But in any case, the situation of each applicant is individual and is considered taking into account his or her circumstances.
The United States has its own laws, so you need to prepare thoroughly before traveling, and it is advisable to read up on the laws and nuances in the state you are going to. Throughout the United States, residents vigorously fight for their rights, so you need to be careful in your behavior – remember about gender equality, it is highly undesirable to call blacks blacks (they are African Americans), do not be rude to the police, and, in general, it is better to behave доброжелательно and avoid arguments.
