    Studying at Italian universities. How to get a higher education

    Ways to obtain education in Italy

    Studying at Italian universities consists of the following stages: two years (Master's - laurea magistrale), three years (Bachelor's - laurea triennale) and five years (Specialist - laurea specialistica). The exception is medicine and pharmacy, which are studied for six years. In addition, universities offer higher professional courses of the first or second level - the so-called "master's courses".

    The admission period for Italian universities usually lasts from the end of March to the end of June. The Ministry of Education of Italy sets a common period for submitting documents for all international students who apply to an Italian university. In order to have time to do everything, it is necessary to start collecting and processing documents in advance - from January.
    In order for a Belarusian to study in Italy, it is necessary to take into account the requirements that university administrations have for foreign applicants.

    Students from Belarus may not take entrance exams for bachelor's programs, but must have:
    • 18 years of age,
    • good knowledge of Italian,
    • 12 years of education in total (11 grades of school + the first year of university or 9 grades of school + 3 years of college).
    The Master's program Laurea Magistrale is open to students who have a diploma from a Belarusian university. However, you can only apply for a specialty related to your Belarusian diploma.

    How to apply for Belarusians to an Italian university?

    To study in Italy, all applications to public universities are submitted through the Italian Embassy in the Republic of Belarus and require personal submission by the applicant.
    It is important to remember that each applicant can apply for study in Italy only once a year, to one university and for one specialty. Those who have successfully passed the international exam on the level of proficiency in the Italian language - PLIDA and received the necessary certificate, in most universities in Italy, are exempt from the compulsory exam in Italian.

    List of documents:
    • completed application form;
    • certificate for 11 grades;
    • certificate of completion of at least 1 year of study at a higher education institution, certified by the Italian embassy;
    • passport, the expiration date of which will be not earlier than 3 months after the student's предполагаемое return home, its photocopy;
    • availability of health insurance valid in the Schengen area for the entire period of stay in Italy;
    • a certificate confirming the financial solvency of the future student. This can be a certified letter from the parents' place of work, a bank statement, or a letter from the organization that issued a grant for study or is sponsoring the applicant;
    • one-way ticket booking;
    • 2 color photographs on a white background;
    • before visiting the embassy, a confirmation letter from the future "alma mater" is required, confirming the payment of tuition and accommodation fees (see below).
    Educational documents (certificate, diploma with annex, academic transcript) must have an apostille stamp from the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Belarus.

    After that, the documents (including the apostille text) are translated into Italian. It is better to do this with a translator accredited at the Italian embassy.

    Next, at the Italian embassy, the procedure for consular legalization (Dichiarazione di valore in loco) of the translated documents must be completed.

    In addition to the above documents, an application form (also certified at the consulate in the legalization department) is submitted.

    From the Italian embassy in Minsk, the documents are sent to the chosen university, and then you just have to wait for an invitation – in the form of an email stating that your documents have been received and reviewed, as well as specifying the date and time of the language exam (CILS – Italian Language Certification for Foreigners). After receiving the invitation, you can apply for a student visa at the embassy.

    Additionally, the package of documents for the embassy must include a housing rental contract in Italy for six months or a hospitality invitation (l’invito d’ospitalità) from the person who wishes to accommodate you during your studies.
    If all conditions are met and the university administration approves your application, you can come before the start of classes, considering the regulated deadlines for personal enrollment at the university. It is important to remember that international applicants, having arrived for exams in September, cannot return home before the start of classes due to visa issues.

    What is the cost of studying in Italian higher education institutions for Belarusians?

    In most higher education institutions in Italy, education for Belarusians is free. However, do not forget about taxes, which will have to be paid in any case. Their cost ranges from 400 to 2000€ per year.

    For Belarusian students, the payment averages 700€. The cost of taxes depends on the student's family income as well as the location of the higher education institution. Students who live in the north of Italy pay 13% more for their studies than other students. If you plan to enroll in a private higher education institution in Italy, annual tuition will cost you from 6,500 to 15,000€. In most public higher education institutions, education is free.

    In what language is the education conducted in Italian higher education institutions?

    If you plan to enroll in a public university in Italy, you will have to confirm your level of Italian language proficiency. Entrance exams are not provided at most Italian universities, but there are a number of faculties where you cannot do without them. Among such specializations are medical, architectural, visual arts, engineering, and many others. This should be taken into account when choosing a future profession.

    Studies at Italian universities are conducted in Italian and English. If you decide to learn Italian at a language school in Italy, you will significantly increase your chances of admission to any Italian university.

    At private universities in the country, as well as at university branches and fashion and design schools, courses are taught mainly in English.

    At public universities, studies are conducted in Italian, but in Laurea Magistrale there is a small list of programs in English. Most English-language courses are in economics and engineering education programs.

    Features of employment for Belarusians during their studies in Italy

    A Belarusian student in Italy can work no more than 20 hours a week or 1040 hours a year. Finding a part-time job here is not so easy: you must convince the employer not only of your competence, but also of your fluency in Italian.

    The easiest way is an internship. This type of work is rarely paid, but if you prove yourself well, you will have the opportunity to get a job on a contract basis. While studying in Italy,
    Belarusians receive a student residence permit.

    The student residence permit must be renewed every year by passing at least 2 exams annually. If you manage to find a job while studying in Italy, you can change your residence permit from student to work.

    What is the cost of renting accommodation in Italy?

    Depending on the city, renting an apartment in Italy will cost you from 300€ to 1,000€ monthly. A room can be found in the range of 350€ to 500€ per month. Accommodation in a hostel costs from 250€ to 600€. The hostel usually has the necessary furniture for living: a desk, a bed, and bookshelves.

    The best option for budget accommodation for foreigners is private residences. They are similar to hostels for students, but the living conditions in the residences are much more comfortable. The rooms have separate showers or bathrooms.

    As in any country, in Italy, the cost of rent is affected by the size of the apartment, the area, its location, and many other factors. The price for renting accommodation starts from 600€ per month. Utilities are paid separately.

    In order to rent housing, a student must enter into a lease agreement with the owner and pay in advance for two months. Very often, many agencies require the tenant to provide documentary evidence of solvency. It is necessary to submit a bank statement.

    Additional information. The education system in modern Italy.

    Italians encounter public educational institutions significantly earlier than when the time comes to enter the university.

    Preschool education in Italy is provided by kindergartens (scuola materna), which children aged 3 to 6 attend. Preparatory classes precede admission to elementary school. Up to 30 little Italians can study in one group.

    Secondary education in Italy is divided into 4 stages. The first two of them — scuola elementare 1 and scuola elementare 2 — belong to elementary school and provide free education for children aged 6 to 11, after which students who successfully pass the final exam receive their first certificate, which confirms the successful mastery of the basic program. Compulsory subjects include reading, writing, arithmetic, foreign language, music, and drawing. Optionally, schoolchildren can also study the basics of religion.

    The next stage of the secondary education system in Italy is junior high school, where children up to 15 years old study. Compared to elementary school, the curriculum is supplemented with subjects such as geography, history, and natural sciences. Senior high school is the level that completes school education in Italy. Within this course, Italian school students up to the age of 18 either prepare for admission to higher education institutions or combine the completion of secondary school with vocational training.

    Special education in Italy is obtained in colleges. Upon completion of these educational institutions, Italian students receive a high school diploma and a certificate of professional qualification.

    There are more than a hundred higher educational institutions in the country, including both public and private institutes. Public universities provide the opportunity to receive free education in Italy, including for foreign citizens. But all students pay a mandatory fee of 500 to 4000 euros per year of study. The price of obtaining education at a private higher school starts at 6,000 euros per year.

    To clarify the accommodation conditions offered to international students during their studies in Italy, it is worth visiting the forum of the chosen educational institution or contacting the administration of the university by email. As a rule, students can choose to stay with an Italian family, in a dormitory, or in apartments near the place of study.

    Higher education in Italy for foreigners is provided by two specialized universities – in Siena and Perugia. Applicants can be admitted to the first year even with a zero level of Italian language knowledge. Thus, to study in Italy, Belarusians do not necessarily need to study Italian grammar and vocabulary in advance. The first semester of study at the universities of Siena and Perugia provides for intensive language course preparation – 6 days a week for 8 hours.

    All other Italian universities require foreign applicants to pass a language test for proficiency in Italian. The test program was developed at the University of Siena and can be assessed from 0 to 4 points. A score of 2 points or higher is considered sufficient to apply to the university. When applying to most public universities, the presence of a CLIS certificate of at least level 2 exempts from the Italian exam. Future students can take the exam for the certificate and receive the coveted certificate in their homeland – at language centers at the Italian consulate.

    Calls and written inquiries are temporarily not accepted.
