How to carry money and medicines across the Belarusian border: the customs service responds

    03.10.2025
Questions about crossing the state border with large sums of money in your wallet and medications in your luggage are always relevant. We collected the most frequent ones and sent them to the State Customs Committee.

People travel abroad with cash, and often it's large amounts in foreign currency.

In addition, travelers take with them various medicines and medical supplies, not only prescription ones.

Therefore, it's important to know exactly how much money and what specific medications are allowed to be taken on a trip.

The State Customs Committee (SCC) responded to inquiries from Tochka.by readers.

Carrying money across the state border

       – I want to carry cash in foreign currency across the Belarusian-Polish border – my relative needs it for treatment. I'm traveling alone. I will have $6 thousand and €4 thousand with me. Do I need to declare them? And in general, in what cases is it mandatory?

       – It is necessary to declare at customs and fill out a passenger customs declaration (PCD) when the total amount of cash that a citizen takes out of Belarus at one time exceeds the amount equivalent to $10 thousand.

At the same time, money in different currencies is converted into dollars at the rate valid on the day the PCD is submitted.

In your case, the amount of cash is $10,738. After all, in addition to $6 thousand, you are carrying €4 thousand, or $4,671 in equivalent according to the National Bank rate.

This means you need to fill out a PCD at customs.

       – I sold my apartment in Belarus – the total amount was a little over $100 thousand. I sold the property through a bank for reliability. I have a confirming document from there about this operation. Can I carry all this money in dollars in cash at one time across the border with the EU?

       – If a citizen is carrying more than $100 thousand in cash, they must not only submit a PTD, but also confirm the origin of the cash with documents.

In your case, this would be a contract of sale of the apartment, as well as an agreement with the bank on conducting the transaction through it and a certificate of withdrawal of cash from your current (settlement) account in this financial institution.

The customs authorities need to be provided with original documents or their copies certified by a notary.

       – I heard that if a family with a child, even a very young one, is carrying cash across the border and the amount exceeds the amount that needs to be declared per person, then the money can literally be divided among family members, including the baby.

So, can two parents with a child carry $30 thousand in US dollars in cash without declaration?

       – The maximum amount of cash in the amount of $10 thousand, which can be carried across the state border without submitting a PTD, is set per person.

If people cross the border as a family, including minor children, then the amount is calculated per person without age restrictions.

This means that the three of you can carry a sum of cash equivalent to $30 thousand without declaration.

If the money is with one person, we recommend that all family members follow through the customs control zone simultaneously when crossing the border to provide the currency being moved in case of customs control.

Please note that this approach does not apply to cases where citizens crossing the customs border are not members of the same family.

Carrying medicines across the state border

       – Is it possible to import the drug "Soliaan" for the treatment of schizophrenia (10 packs of 30 tablets) into Belarus from Poland? Are there any restrictions on importing this medicine?

       – The laws provide for mandatory declaration of medicines restricted from movement across the customs border.

We are talking about medications containing narcotic or psychotropic substances – they are allowed to be imported strictly in a certain quantity and with specific documents attached.

Three exhaustive lists have been approved for the latter:

       - narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances and their precursors

       - national lists of narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances and their precursors subject to control in the EAEU member states

       - republican list of narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances and their precursors subject to state control in Belarus.

The prescription drug "Soliaan" is not listed in these lists, which means it does not fall under declaration.

However, we recommend taking with you on your trip a document – an extract from medical records or a doctor's prescription indicating the name, dosage and amount needed per day, certified with the seal and signature of the doctor – to present to customs authorities.

If your first aid kit contains medicines such as Theraflu ND, Solpadein, Pseudophedrin, Sudafed, Relanium, Alprox, Cirrus, Diazepamum, Lorafen, Corvalol, Phenazepam, and if you are not sure that there are no prohibited substances in the composition of the medicines in your luggage, in order to avoid ambiguous situations when crossing the border, we recommend that you include the medicines being transported in the PDT.

       – I am allergic, going on a sea cruise. I want to take with me diphenhydramine (one pack of 20 tablets), the medicine was prescribed by a doctor. Will I have any questions at the border?

       – As in the previous situation, the medication "Diphenhydramine" is not included in the lists of drugs restricted for movement across the customs border that need to be declared.

However, since it is a prescription drug in Belarus, an extract from medical records or a doctor's prescription is required.

       – Are there any restrictions on importing vitamins and dietary supplements into Belarus?

       – Regarding vitamins and dietary supplements, it is important to know that whether they are classified as goods for personal use depends on the frequency of crossing the border with these items, their quantity, and assortment.

If they are not classified as goods for personal use, such items must be declared by submitting a goods declaration or removed from the customs territory of the EAEU.

       Thus, vitamins and dietary supplements:

       - are not considered goods for personal use if they are moved across the border more than once a calendar day

no more than 5 packages in total – more than once every 7 calendar days

no more than 10 packages in total – once every 7 calendar days or less frequently.

When calculating the frequency of a person's movement across the border, the start of the period is considered to be 00 hours 00 minutes of the calendar day in which the previous entry into Belarus was made.
