The Allied "Schengen" system started operating at the beginning of this year and opened up new opportunities for traveling within the Allied State.
Tourists from third countries who arrived in Belarus from Poland are expected to start flying on the new route from Brest to St. Petersburg, Belarusian Consul General in St. Petersburg Nikolai Rogozhnik confirmed to a Sputnik correspondent.
We are talking about those who came to Brest on a Belarusian visa. Thanks to the mutual recognition of visas, which has been in effect in the Allied State since the beginning of the year, they can continue to travel to the Russian Federation by various means.
"This is now a transit component. I think, certainly, St. Petersburg is an additional incentive, since it's only four hours to Moscow by 'Sapsan'. Yes, this is logistics for people... In my opinion, it's improving significantly," the consul general said.
Rogozhnik added: he hasn't heard of any problems with the new visa recognition mechanism for tourists from third countries.
In turn, FSB border service officers working at Pulkovo Airport confirmed to a Sputnik correspondent that citizens of third countries with a Belarusian visa can indeed fly from Brest to St. Petersburg.
The agreement on the Allied "Schengen" also provides for mutual visa-free travel. In other words, if a country has a visa-free regime with both Belarus and Russia, then citizens of that country only need to have an identity document recognized by both Allied countries. In this case, they can freely travel throughout the Allied State.
If a citizen has a visa-free regime, for example, only in Belarus, then they will need a Russian visa to fly to the Russian Federation.
Direct passenger flights connected Brest and St. Petersburg on April 2. The first Belavia aircraft solemnly departed from Brest to the northern capital of Russia on Wednesday. Flights will be operated twice a week: on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The flight duration is a little less than two hours: 1 hour and 50 minutes from Brest, and 1 hour and 45 minutes in the opposite direction.
