Latvia has been closing the Paternieki checkpoint for pedestrians since March 19

Now it will be possible to cross the Belarusian-Latvian border only by vehicle.
Starting from March 19, Latvia will stop crossing the border on foot and on bicycles at the Paternieki checkpoint on the border with Belarus, the relevant decision was made by the country's Cabinet of Ministers at the initiative of the Interior Ministry.
Now it will be possible to cross the Belarusian-Latvian border in Grigorovshchyna settlement only by motor vehicles. The same procedure will apply at the Terekhovo and Grebneva checkpoints on the border of Latvia and the Russian Federation.
"The decision to restrict the activities of these border checkpoints was made taking into account a number of important aspects of security and public order," the Cabinet said in a statement.
It also emphasizes that one of the main reasons is the risks of hybrid threats and migration crises.
The Government of Latvia noted: The republic has concerns that, as in the case of the closure of the Finnish-Russian border, there may be an increase in attempts to illegally cross the state border.
On Sunday, March 16, Latvia was already closing the only Paternieki checkpoint operating on the border with Belarus. Registration of vehicles was suspended unilaterally and without prior notification to the Belarusian border guards. Later, Africans traveling to the European Union with valid documents were named as the reason for this.
Latvian services resumed the passage of vehicles only two and a half hours later. In total, the border remained closed for nine hours.
