A reminder for parents: how to protect children from criminals on the internet

    25.06.2024
Criminals who commit sexualized violence against minors often find their victims through social media. And sometimes it's not even necessary through the child's own social media, because adults close to him also post photos and videos with their children. In this article, we want to draw the attention of parents, other relatives, friends of families with children, etc. to how seemingly harmless content can attract pedophiles.

Videos and photos of children on Tik Tok and Instagram can become unhealthily popular: adult men write inappropriate comments under the video, as a little girl is choosing a dress in a store, and add to their favorites a video where a girl eats a cucumber (this is a real case, this particular video has been saved more than 374 thousand times).

The problem is so serious that in 2020, YouTube banned users from leaving comments under videos that are marked as "childish." This is because pedophiles left comments with timecodes for moments that they found "sexy" in completely harmless videos, for example, where children get massages, or where children do gymnastics.

Here are some tips on how to protect your children from unwanted attention on social media.:

       1. Do not post photos or videos of children eating ice cream, lollipops, bananas, etc.

       2. Do not post photos of your children in swimsuits. You will be surprised how sexualized comments are written by men on the Internet under photos of children in swimsuits and even just in open clothes: skirts, summer dresses, shorts, etc.

       3. Do not post videos on social media in which your child is hysterical and crying. Some criminals fetishize tears and screams. Besides, it's unethical to post a video showing your child in such a vulnerable position. Most likely, when he grows up and finds out about it, it will be very unpleasant for him.

       4. Do not post videos on social media showing a child recovering from anesthesia. The reasons are the same as in the previous paragraph: the state of confused consciousness can be fetishized by criminals.

       5. If you use dating apps, do not post photos of yourself and your child in them and do not indicate their age. Remember Nabokov's Lolita: in this book, Humbert deliberately began a romantic relationship with the mother of little Lolita, so that he could later seduce the girl without any obstacles or suspicions.

Criminals may specifically look for mothers with children of a certain age in order to have unlimited access to them later.

       6. If you are looking for a rented apartment, do not post photos of yourself and your children in the ad and do not indicate their age. The reasons are the same as in the previous paragraph: criminals may specifically choose single mothers or families with children of a certain age as tenants. The owner of a rented apartment, as the owner of the property, may require periodic visits to the apartment in which you live, whether in your presence or not, it does not matter. Of course, many people would refuse such conditions, but if the tenant, for example, is a single mother in despair, she simply cannot afford to be picky. But even if you are in a very difficult financial situation, put the safety of your children first.
