It will be possible to apply for Schengen online, but not for everyone – the EU has approved visa changes

    14.11.2023
The European Union has approved new rules that will allow for online applications for Schengen visas. This was announced by the press service of the Council of the European Union.

Two regulations adopted by the Council on November 13 amend the procedure for submitting applications for a Schengen visa, which grants entry to almost all EU countries, as well as Switzerland, Norway, and Iceland.

With some exceptions, applications for Schengen visas will be submitted through a newly created online platform – applicants will enter all necessary data there, upload electronic copies of their travel and supporting documents, and pay visa fees.

Personal presence at consular offices will only be required for those applying for the first time, as well as for individuals who have obtained a new travel document or whose biometric data is no longer up to date.

In addition, the appearance of the issued Schengen visa will change – instead of the current sticker, a barcode with a cryptographic signature will be used.

The regulations will enter into force 20 days after their official publication in the European Union journal, but the date of application of the new rules will be determined after completion of all technical work required for their implementation.
