As of today, Latvia has closed the entrance from Belarus for cars with Russian license plates.

    13.09.2023
According to the explanations of the European Commission and the conclusion of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, from 18.00 on Tuesday, persons with vehicles registered in Russia are prohibited from entering the European Union through the Latvian-Russian and Latvian-Belarusian border crossings, the State Revenue Service (SRS) reports.

Also, cars with Russian license plates are not allowed through Lithuanian border checkpoints.

As explained in the SRS, so far there has already been a ban on crossing the border of the European Union for cargo carriers, namely tractors and trailers registered in Russia. The ban does not apply to Russian-registered trucking companies that transport goods by road in transit through the European Union between the Kaliningrad Region and Russia.

Persons with such vehicles will have to return to the Russian Federation or Belarus from a border checkpoint.

"If a person refuses to comply with the instructions of the customs authority, including returning back to Russia or Belarus, it will be possible to make a decision to confiscate the vehicle in accordance with the regulations of the customs sphere," the message says.

It is noted that this entry ban will not apply to vehicles intended for use by diplomatic and consular missions of the European Union and member States, including delegations, embassies and representative offices, during their movement.

At the same time, individuals will be allowed to return from the European Union to Russia in passenger vehicles registered in Russia, if they are not declared as goods and are used only as a means of transportation.

On September 8, the European Commission published clarifications on the importation and importation of goods from Russia. They say that the import of personal cars and personal belongings is prohibited. Later, the European Commission stated that this list is advisory in nature and EU countries should individually decide whether to impose bans or not.
