The State Border Committee explained the innovation as preparation for implementing the agreement on mutual recognition of visas.
On the border of Belarus and Russia, checkpoints were set up and passport control was introduced on May 5, TASS reports citing the State Border Committee of Belarus. The Border Committee explained that this is just a test as part of preparing to implement the agreement on mutual recognition of visas.
- While it has not yet been recognized, they are monitoring the border, - the agency was told on the hotline of the State Border Committee.
And they added that no queues are recorded at the checkpoints.
Previously, border control by the Belarusian side on the Belarusian-Russian border was not carried out.
The agreement on mutual recognition of visas between Russia and Belarus was signed in June 2020. According to it, foreigners who have obtained a visa from one of the countries will be able to cross the borders of the second country without obtaining an additional visa. It is noted that the regime of mutual recognition of visas also applies to persons who have temporary residence permit, residence permit or an invitation to attend an international sports event in Russia or Belarus.
In addition, citizens who are entitled to visa-free entry into one of the countries do not need to obtain a visa to cross the border of the second country.
