    Digital nomadism: opportunities for Belarusians in 2023

    23.03.2023
       Digital nomads are people who use a computer or phone for work, and therefore are not tied to a place of residence or office. Many countries allow digital nomads to obtain a special visa (Digital Nomad Visa) or status. Thanks to such programs, they can legally live in the country and work remotely for companies located outside the country that issued the visa. This way, digital nomads have a positive impact on the economy without taking away jobs. In this material, we talk about several countries (and even one island!) that have a digital nomad program.

       Spain

       The Spanish digital nomad visa is available to anyone who works remotely. It is suitable for programmers, designers, SMM managers, etc.

       The minimum income must be twice the minimum wage in Spain. You need to earn at least $2680 per month, that is, about $32,000 per year.

       You can get a digital nomad visa in Spain if:

       • you have citizenship of a country that is not part of the European Union (in addition, it should not be citizenship of Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway);

       • you are self-employed or do not work for a Spanish company;

       • you have no criminal record (including in Spain) in the last 5 years;

       • you have health insurance in Spain;

       • you are a professional in your field, you have a higher education in your specialty, or official work experience (at least 3 months).

       The digital nomad visa is valid for a year, but it can be extended up to 5 years. You can apply for such a visa at the embassy or right in Spain if you come there on a tourist visa and manage to apply for a nomad visa within the first three months.

       Kyrgyzstan

       In Kyrgyzstan, there are no income requirements for the digital nomad status. You can apply for digital nomad status if you work in the IT or design field.

       There is no fee to obtain this status. Moreover, its holder can live in Kyrgyzstan without a visa, without registering at the place of residence, and receives a work permit for one year, which can then be extended for another year.

       There are several cases when you may be denied digital nomad status: for example, if you provide false information about yourself when applying, or have committed a crime against world peace and security, incite hostility, have been convicted of murder or terrorism, etc.

       You can apply for digital nomad status here.

       Svalbard Archipelago

       The most unusual option in our selection. Svalbard is located in the northernmost part of Norway in the Arctic Ocean. It is the only region in Norway where you can live with a digital nomad visa.

       The island, like the rest of Norway, has a low crime rate. However, the archipelago has its own peculiarities that may not appeal to everyone. For example, there may be encounters with polar bears, strong winds, and each year there is a polar night and a polar day, each lasting about 4 months.

       You will be able to apply for a digital nomad visa if you work remotely as:

       • a programmer;

       • a developer;

       • in the SMM field;

       • an online foreign language teacher;

       • a support specialist;

       • in the field of SEO copywriting.

       To get such a visa approved, you need to find accommodation in Svalbard in advance, have a confirmed annual income of about 35,000 euros, and insurance valid in Norway.

       The digital nomad visa here costs 600 euros. Also, such a visa does not exempt you from paying taxes in Norway (tax must be paid if you reside in Svalbard for more than 183 days).

       You can apply for a visa on the website UDI (Norway’s Directorate of Immigration).
