The Consulate General of Belarus will open in St. Petersburg

Belarus will open a Consulate General in St. Petersburg. The decision adopted by the Council of Ministers is planned to be implemented by the first of July.
Without exaggeration, it can be called one of the results of many years of effective cooperation between Belarus and the subjects of the North-Western Federal District of the Russian Federation. Karelia, Leningrad, Vologda, Murmansk, Arkhangelsk (including the Nenets Autonomous Okrug) regions and the Komi Republic are "assigned" to the current St. Petersburg branch of the Embassy of Belarus.
The locomotives of attraction, however, are the Northern Capital of Russia and its surroundings. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus, St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region were among the top ten Russian regions importing goods from Belarus last year. St. Petersburg is also in the top 10 for the supply of goods to Belarus.
In the first nine months of 2022, the trade turnover between the Republic of Belarus and St. Petersburg reached $ 1.5 billion.
Last summer, President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko stressed during a meeting with Governor of St. Petersburg Alexander Beglov: "We will do everything to ensure that we do not lose this huge Russian site. Our trade turnover is developing well, and we can increase it. Especially considering the behavior of Western partners, as they say. I think that during this and next year we will reach the level of cooperation and development between Belarus and Russia that we need to be at."
If in 2021 the trade turnover between Belarus and St. Petersburg amounted to just over $ 1.7 billion, then in the first nine months of 2022 it was possible to exceed the target of 1.5 billion. Belarus has managed to fulfill a large order for the supply of passenger transport from Minsk Automobile Plant to St. Petersburg. Following this, deliveries of tractors and special equipment from Amkodor began to operate on the winter streets of the Northern capital of the Russian Federation. Belarus has good prospects for developing cooperation with the Leningrad Region in the industrial sector, including the supply of passenger, road construction, municipal equipment, agriculture, construction, and infrastructure projects.
It is also important to mention another crucial point. While an embassy is a diplomatic mission dealing with state issues, a consulate is an institution representing the country in the host state to protect the rights and interests of its citizens and legal entities. The new status of the diplomatic mission confirms that many Belarusians live, conduct business, and study in the Northwestern Federal District of the Russian Federation.
