    What is a transit visa and in what cases is it needed?

    20.01.2023
       A transit visa (type B in Belarus) is a visa that is required if a foreigner plans to stay in Belarus for more than 24 hours. It is issued when a foreigner is traveling from one country to another with a transfer in a third country that is not the final destination. Simply put, if you are flying somewhere with a layover and need to leave the airport's transit area, you will need a transit visa.

       With it, you will be able to leave the airport to transfer to another mode of transport (for example, a bus or car) and head to your destination country. Important: the Belarusian transit visa is not intended for traveling around Belarus.

       Transit of foreigners through Belarus

       Foreigners can stay in Belarus in transit for no more than two days (from the calendar date of entry). The exception is a forced stop.

       A stop is considered forced if it occurs in the case of:

       – tsunamis, earthquakes, severe forest fires, accidents and other emergencies and natural disasters that prevent the transport from moving further;

       – when the vehicle is broken and needs repair;

       – illness or a health condition that is life-threatening to the foreigner and/or the person accompanying them (according to the conclusion of the healthcare organization of the Republic of Belarus);

       – unforeseen delays when transferring from one mode of transport to another at the transfer point;

       – other circumstances that prevent further progress.

       In what cases a foreigner does not need a transit visa in the territory of the Republic of Belarus:

       • Having other visas to Belarus with the right to cross the state border (for example, short-term or long-term);

       • Flight through Belarus without transfers;

       • Flight with a transfer at the airport in Belarus, if: 1) the foreigner has documents for the right to enter the destination country (air ticket with departure date); 2) he plans to stay in Belarus for less than 24 hours. In this case, it is forbidden to leave the airport transit zone;

       • If the foreigner is a citizen of a country with which Belarus has an agreement on visa-free travel;

       • When the President of the Republic of Belarus establishes a visa-free procedure for transit travel through the territory of Belarus.
