What documents are required to obtain a visa for marriage in Germany, and how can such a marriage be legalized in Belarus?

One of the frequently asked questions to the hotline is about getting married. In this material, we will look at what is needed to travel for the purpose of marriage, as well as ways to legalize a foreign marriage certificate in the territory of the Republic of Belarus (and what will happen if it is not legalized).
What documents are needed to apply for a visa?
In Germany, it is impossible to formalize a relationship with a foreigner who has arrived in the country on a regular Schengen (tourist) visa.
Therefore, it is necessary to obtain a national visa, which can be obtained at the German embassy in the country of origin.
The list of documents for obtaining a national visa can be found on the website of the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Minsk or contact the hotline for safe departure, stay abroad and combating human trafficking in the Republic of Belarus (phone numbers are listed at the bottom of the article).
The duration of the visa procedure takes 2-3 months, depending on the situation, it may take more or less time.
How to legalize such a marriage in Belarus?
For your marriage certificate to be recognized in Belarus, it will need to be legalized (stamped with an apostille). This must be done in the country where such a document was issued, in this case, Germany.
The apostille certifies the signature and status of the signatory, as well as the authenticity of the seal. In Belarus, the marriage document must be translated into Russian or Belarusian and the translation certified by a notary.
After that, the Belarusian registry office will make an entry about the marriage in the passport and make the necessary changes to the records of the relevant civil status acts.
What will happen if you do not legalize your marriage certificate in Belarus?
If you do not legalize your marriage in Belarus as described above, it will be considered invalid in the Republic of Belarus.
Important: please note that if you change your surname when getting married, your Belarusian passport will be valid for one month.
