Marriage abroad. Where can a Belarusian currently get a certificate of no impediment to marriage?
Starting from January 1, 2025, amendments to the Code on Marriage and Family of the Republic of Belarus regarding the issuance of certificates confirming the absence of obstacles to marry abroad have come into force.
According to these changes, starting from January 1, 2025, registry offices no longer issue certificates stating that you are not married. To obtain such a document, you need to contact a notary in Belarus. Now the document is drawn up based on your statements. At the same time, a citizen has the right to contact any notary in the Republic of Belarus, regardless of registration.
The citizen's personal appearance with the relevant documents is required at the notary's office; it is not possible to certify such a statement by proxy.

Requirements for the content of such a document have been established. In the statement, the citizen indicates that at the time of submission, they are not married and have never been married, or were previously married, which was terminated (indicating the date of termination), and also indicates the absence of obstacles to marriage (if at least one person is in another marriage, are related, or at least one of the persons entering into marriage is declared incapable).
The applicant is responsible for providing incorrect data. The notary does not certify the facts stated in the application, but only confirms the authenticity of the applicant's signature.
What documents to have with you. If you were never married before, just have your passport with you. If marriages were concluded before, then you need to take documents to the notary that confirm the termination of previous marriages, namely:
- court decision on divorce;
- divorce certificate;
- death certificate of the spouse.
If there were several marriages, a document for each marriage is submitted.
Also, starting from January 1, 2025, citizens of the Republic of Belarus and foreign nationals permanently residing in Belarus are obliged to submit information about a marriage concluded abroad to the registry offices within 6 months.
For additional information, you can contact the hotline of the public association "Business Women's Club".
