    What is the family reunification program (using Italy as an example)

    Family reunification is an immigration program that allows a family member (such as a parent, child, or spouse) to move to a country where another family member legally resides. Many countries offer this opportunity. The conditions for participating in the family reunification program are generally similar in different countries. In this material, we will consider the option of moving under such a program using Italy as an example.

    The mechanism of the family reunification procedure is divided into two stages. The first stage is the verification stage. Your case will be handled by the "Single Immigration Window" service (Sportello unico per l'immigrazione). This service will check how well you meet the requirements for issuing a family reunification permit (Nulla osta). All your details, data, and documents will be verified; it is important that all the provided information is accurate.

    Immigration authorities also pay attention to whether you are actually close to the family member with whom you plan to reunite. Emotional ties, shared past and present are checked: whether you really want to bring a family member to Italy, or just help an acquaintance move.

    In the second stage, all your documents and the family reunification permit (Nulla osta) will be reviewed by the Unified Immigration Department. The inviting party sends all information to the place of residence electronically. If the check does not reveal any reasons for refusal, the further decision will be made by the local authorities in Italy (prefecture). If the decision is positive, the family member receives a family reunification visa and can immediately apply for a residence permit upon arrival in Italy.

    Requirements for the applicant in Italy, whose relatives plan to obtain a family reunification visa:

    • The inviting party must have housing sufficient for the family's residence;

    • Annual income, depending on the family composition;

    • Obtaining a family reunification permit (Nulla osta).

    What documents must be collected by the inviting foreigner?

    1. The applicant's passport.

    2. A copy of the passport of the family member with whom reunification is planned.

    3. A copy of a valid residence permit for at least 1 year.

    4. A stamp duty worth 16 euros (marca da bollo). The identification number of the stamp will need to be entered into the reserved fields in the online forms. The stamp itself must be subsequently presented to the immigration office.

    Within 8 days after entering Italy, the foreign family member must contact the Police Department at their place of residence and apply for a residence permit for 5 years (Carta di soggiorno per stranieri). After 5 years, they will have the opportunity to request permanent residence (Carta di soggiorno permanente per familiare di cittadini europei).
