Jobs in the USA for Belarusians

Every day, the "hotline for safe departure and stay abroad" of the NGO "Business Women's Club" receives dozens of calls. One of the most relevant topics for those who contacted the "hotline" is
finding a job abroad. What are the features of the employment process? How to arrange all the necessary documents for work? How to get a work visa? Many of those who decide to go to the States to earn money ask themselves these and other questions. In this article, we will explain all the main aspects of employment in the USA.
One of the main conditions for successful employment is a good level of English. Avoid looking for a job in the USA without knowing the language. This idea is extremely unsuccessful.
How to look for a job?
You can start looking for a job in the USA:
- independently (the easiest way is to look for an employer in local American companies directly)
- with the help of specialized recruitment agencies (to search for intermediary firms, the official website of the US Department of Labor doleta.gov or the American government portal usa.gov will do)
What is offered?
America is ready to accept both experienced specialists and students. There are 3 types of the most popular places of employment for Belarusians:
— agricultural internships
An internship in the field of agriculture is suitable for people with education or work experience in the agricultural sector. A yearly work contract is offered to suitable candidates with basic English and the necessary skills. After completing a year-long internship, you must leave the country. Participation in the internship is possible once.
— programs for students of the 1st-4th year
Work and Travel is the most popular student exchange program. It gives young people from all over the world the chance to work and travel in the USA. In order to go to work in the USA under the
Work and Travel USA program, you need to receive an official job invitation and a J-1 visa. According to the program, the work must be seasonal or temporary in nature and participants must return home before October 1st, regardless of when they arrived in the USA.
— work on cruise liners
To work on a liner, a special visa is required. Sometimes it is called a "transit visa for a seafarer". This document allows you to stay on American soil for up to 3 days, meaning movement around the US is possible when the liner is moored. The special visa can be issued for up to one year. The visa also allows multiple entries into the US.
All programs have a limited period of stay in the US and do not lead to direct immigration. Many working immigrants strive to obtain a Green Card. The "Green Card" indicates legal residence in the States and grants the right to free employment. Its processing can take several years, so local employers are not eager to apply for its issuance for a new employee and limit themselves to temporary work visas.
How to get a work visa to the USA?

The algorithm of your actions consists of five steps.
1. Looking for an employer and preparing documents
After you have found an employer, they must file a petition for the employee. For this, the employer will request the necessary documents from you (passport copy, translation of education document, resume in English, etc.).
2. Obtaining the necessary permits
After submitting the petition, the employer waits for its approval by the Department of Labor and gets the support of the US Citizenship and Immigration Services. The petition can be submitted up to six months before the expected date of visa issuance. Its consideration will take from 2 weeks to 2 months.
3. Applying for a visa
If a positive decision is made, the employing company will receive a notification. Only after that, the future employee applies for a visa. To do this, you need to fill out a form on
the US State Department website, pay the consular fee (the cost of a US work visa is $190), choose an interview date at the embassy, and collect the
required package of documents.
4. Day X. Interview at the US Consulate
The interview is the most important part of obtaining an American visa. It is during the interview that the visa consul makes the final decision on your application. Since May 31, new rules have come into force. Now the US State Department will request information about the applicant's social media accounts. Be prepared to provide information about your accounts on Facebook and VKontakte, email addresses, and phone numbers for the past five years. The нововведение will affect tourist, student, and work visas.
5. Let's be patient
Immediately after the interview, in case of refusal, the passport is given immediately. In case of a positive decision, the passport with the visa is picked up within the period specified by the embassy. To pick up the passport, you need to present an identity document or its notarized copy.
The process of obtaining an American visa is not a one-day affair. The main thing is not to panic, but to collect your thoughts and follow all the steps of the algorithm. But if you haven't found the information you need, consult us by phone from 08.00 to 20.00.
