Working in the Czech Republic. What should a foreigner and a Belarusian know?
Working in the Czech Republic is a popular destination for labor migration among Belarusians. The Czechs are quite tolerant towards foreigners. Belarusians, in turn, are attracted by the ease of the language and European working conditions and wages. According to statistics from the beginning of 2020, every eighth worker in the Czech Republic is a foreigner. Mostly, people from Ukraine, Slovakia, Russia, and Belarus go to the Czech Republic. There are several ways to find work. You can search on your own on websites and social networks. Many Belarusians contact the "hotline for safe travel and stay abroad and combating human trafficking"
8-801-201-5555, 113 of the NGO "Club of Business Women" to get information about employment in the Czech Republic.
Our "hotline" often receives not only calls but also letters from Belarusians and foreign citizens. Recently, we received a letter from a citizen of Uzbekistan (a man named Rustam) asking for help in finding employment in the Czech Republic. The man came to Belarus eight years ago. He is here on the basis of permanent residence.
We remind you that the NGO "Club of Business Women" provides information support to citizens of the Republic of Belarus traveling abroad for various purposes, as well as foreigners staying or already living on the territory of the Republic of Belarus. The organization does not arrange employment for citizens (Belarusians, foreigners) abroad.
Rustam can find a job in the Czech Republic on his own, but he needs to know that he needs to obtain a work visa to work in the Czech Republic. At the same time, he can only work for the employer who will be specified in the job invitation.
A foreign citizen can be employed in the Czech Republic if he has:
- a work permit (valid work permit and valid short-term visa (up to 90 days), or long-term visa (more than 90 days), or long-term residence permit for the purpose of employment);
- or a green card;
- or a blue card. More details about this
here.
Jobs in the Czech Republic can be searched for independently on
the website: the official website of the Ministry of Labor of the Czech Republic. The portal searches all Czech labor exchanges, and the vacancies issued assume the possibility of hiring a foreigner, also on other job search services. Knowledge of the Czech language is required to use them:
https://www.volnamista.cz,
https://dobraprace.cz
Here you can also see the suggested websites for job search.
In order for a foreigner to be able to work in the Czech Republic, he must obtain a work permit (Povoleni k zamestnani) from the Ministry of Labor.
The document issued to the foreigner must contain the following information:
- the foreigner's identification details.
- information about the employer.
- data on the type of work performed.
- place of work.
- period of validity.
To apply for a permit, in addition to a completed application, the following are provided:
- a copy of the page of the passport with the foreigner's personal details.
- an employment contract or an agreement to conclude such a contract from the specified date.
- proof of qualifications (diploma), if required by the terms of employment. All documents must be translated into Czech, and diplomas/certificates must be apostilled and then translated. Based on a work permit in the Czech Republic, it is necessary to obtain a work visa at the Czech Embassy in your country of residence. Rustam currently has a residence permit in Belarus, so he can apply for a Czech work visa at the Czech Embassy in Minsk without having to travel to Uzbekistan (Tashkent) for this purpose.
First, the man needs to obtain a Czech short-term visa for the purpose of work, which is issued for up to 90 days. Then, having worked in the Czech Republic with this visa, having proven himself at work, having gained the support and desire of the employer to allow him to continue working, the employer collects the necessary documents and gives them to the employee to apply for a long-term work visa in Belarus.
While in the Czech Republic already on a long-term visa, you can submit documents to apply for a Labor Card for two years. Documents must be submitted before the visa expires.
The complete list of documents for obtaining a short-term visa and then a long-term visa must be clarified at the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Minsk, tel.: + 375 17 294-51-91, 294-51-18, 294-52-49 or on the
website.
IMPORTANT: If Rustam, who has a residence permit in the Republic of Belarus, stays outside the Republic of Belarus for more than one year from the date of his last departure from Belarus, his permanent residence permit in our country will be revoked.

8-801-201-5555, 113 of the NGO "Club of Business Women" to receive advice on legal employment in the Czech Republic. The procedure for the employment of Belarusians in the Czech Republic is almost the same as for foreign citizens.
In order for a Belarusian woman to work in the Czech Republic, she must be officially employed: to work ONLY with a work visa. No other visa allows for official employment: not a tourist visa, not a visitor visa.

Many Belarusians strive to go abroad, thoughtlessly accepting the first job offers. Choosing a job in another country is your personal responsibility, to
avoid becoming a victim of fraud you need to take care of yourself in advance. Think through the entire trip in detail, rather than frantically orient yourself on the spot, hoping that without knowledge of the language and the necessary information, no one will mislead you, and you will not find yourself in an unforeseen situation.
It is especially important to carefully review the employment contract in advance!
The document must contain the following information:
- the period of validity, nature and place of work;
- working conditions and pay, including for work at night, overtime, weekends and holidays;
- the amount of bonuses, allowances and deductions from wages;
- rights and obligations, responsibilities of the parties;
- the procedure and conditions for termination or extension of the employment contract.
