Working abroad. Is it good where we are not?

Today, the republican job vacancy database contains more than 94 thousand job offers. The figure would seem impressive. Nevertheless, the labor market situation in Belarus is not so rosy: the number of vacancies is declining, salaries are not growing, and in some sectors they are even falling. Therefore, recently, working abroad has become increasingly attractive to more and more Belarusians. High salary, unexplored places, new knowledge and experience — all these are undoubted advantages. But even alongside these prospects, there is always room for fears. Information about scammers and fraudsters posing as legal recruitment agencies for working abroad keeps slipping through.

Experts from the NGO "Club of Business Women" of the hotline 8-801-201-5555; 113 for safe departure and stay abroad in this article will tell you where, who and how you can get a job legally.

    Where are they going?

According to statistics from the Department of Citizenship and Migration, in the first half of 2019, 5,123 Belarusians left for work abroad under signed agreements and contracts through legal entities and individual entrepreneurs licensed for employment outside the Republic of Belarus. This is 759 people less than in the same period in 2018. Those who left on their own are not recorded in the statistics. Therefore, the data on the countries to which people go to work are higher in terms of the number of labor migrants from Belarus. Some go to "conquer" Europe, others storm Russia, and still others explore the countries of the Persian Gulf. Russia, Poland, Lithuania, Germany, the Czech Republic — these are the top five countries where Belarusians most often go "for the ruble".

Going to Russia — not so scary?

We are historically close to Russia, which will certainly facilitate adaptation in a new place. The lack of a language barrier will also be a plus. Russian employers are interested in painters, plasterers, facing masons, tile layers, concrete workers, stonemasons, and production workers. The profession of an international driver is also popular. There is a chance to find work for holders of engineering specialties as well.

A Russian employer does not need to obtain a work permit for a Belarusian. If you decide to go to Russia to earn money, you will be hired in the same way as Russians. A labor contract will be concluded, which will specify all working conditions in detail and provide full information about the employer. The contract will be concluded in writing in two copies.

Migration trend No. 2 – Poland

Poland is in second place in the rating of the most common countries where Belarusians go to work. Poland needs seamstresses, knitters, installers, welders, builders, general workers, cooks, waiters, maids, drivers of categories C and E.

It is officially impossible to get a job in the EU countries without a national work visa. If you plan to work in Poland for more than 90 days within a year, you must apply for a long-term national visa. It grants the right to stay in Poland for the duration of the visa, which cannot exceed 1 year.

Or maybe to the Baltic states?

Next on the list of popular countries is Lithuania. Most often, international drivers are needed. Builders, masons, casters, facade workers are also needed here. There is a chance to get a job as an auto mechanic. Citizens of the EU have a preferential right to employment in Lithuania. If there are no applicants from among them to fill the vacancy, workers are sought among immigrants and citizens of other countries. Each vacancy in Lithuania, which is planned to be filled by a foreign worker, is posted on websites or in print media. If no Lithuanians or EU residents wishing to get the vacant position are found within 30 days, then the company has the opportunity to hire a foreigner. In order to work in Lithuania, Belarusians need not only the appropriate permit, but also a work visa. If a long stay in the country is planned, it will be a multiple national visa (type D), which can be issued for a year.

    Let's go to the fields!

In Finland and Germany, Belarusians are mainly employed in agriculture. Often, students and young people under 25 are also invited to Germany for vacancies as governesses, waiters, and workers on farms. Work in the fields of Finland is also quite popular. Many people come here to pick strawberries or cucumbers.

Germany protects its labor market very strongly. To obtain a work visa to Germany, first of all, you need an official invitation from an employer. Then you submit an application for a work permit and visa. Next, the embassy sends your application to the German Foreign Ministry for consideration. First, the authorities will carefully consider whether they need a foreign worker in this field, or whether a specialist from Germany or an EU country can be found for such a vacancy, and how professional the invited employee is. Only if you meet all the criteria perfectly will you be issued a work visa and official permission to work. Unskilled workers have virtually no chance of obtaining it; such permits are issued in special cases.

Experts from the NGO "Club of Business Women" advise choosing only legal forms of employment and not to be tempted by high salaries offered for unofficial work. After all, if you take unofficial work, you will be outside the law and automatically waive the rights provided by the host country.
