    What is a transit visa and when is it needed?

    A transit visa (type B in Belarus) is a visa that is required if a foreigner plans to stay in Belarus for more than 24 hours. It is issued when a foreigner is traveling from one country to another with a transfer in a third country that is not the final destination. Simply put, if you are flying somewhere with a layover and need to leave the airport's transit area, you will need a transit visa.

    With it, you will be able to leave the airport to transfer to another mode of transport (for example, a bus or car) and head to your destination country. Important: the Belarusian transit visa is not intended for traveling around Belarus.

    Transit of foreigners through Belarus

    Foreigners can stay in Belarus in transit for no more than two days (from the calendar date of entry). The exception is a forced stop.

    A stop is considered forced if it occurs in the case of:

    – tsunamis, earthquakes, severe forest fires, accidents, and other emergencies and natural disasters that prevent transportation from moving further;

    – when the vehicle is broken and needs repair;

    – illness or a health condition that is life-threatening to the foreigner and/or the person accompanying them (according to the conclusion of the healthcare organization of the Republic of Belarus);

    – unforeseen delays when transferring from one mode of transport to another at the transfer point;

    – other circumstances that prevent further progress.

    In what cases a foreigner does not need a transit visa on the territory of the Republic of Belarus:

    • Having other visas to Belarus with the right to cross the state border (for example, short-term or long-term);

    • Flying through Belarus without transfers;

    • A flight with a layover at a Belarusian airport is allowed if: 1) a foreigner has documents proving the right to enter the destination country (an air ticket with a departure date); 2) they plan to stay in Belarus for less than 24 hours. Leaving the airport's transit zone is not permitted;

    • If the foreigner is a citizen of a country with which Belarus has a visa-free travel agreement;

    • When the President of the Republic of Belarus establishes a visa-free procedure for transit travel through Belarusian territory.

    Please note that the rules for staying in Belarus with a transit visa may differ from those in other countries. If you need information about a transit visa to another country, you should look for it on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country you are interested in.
