Russia + Belarus = Love

About 10 years ago, Russia and Belarus signed an agreement on mutual stamping of marriage or divorce records. This means that you can register or dissolve a marriage at the registry office of either of the two countries. Usually, marriage registration is possible not earlier than three days and not later than three months from the date of submitting the application. However, the standard period can be shortened for valid reasons if appropriate documents are provided.
The package of documents is identical for both countries. It includes:
- passports
- application for marriage from the bride and groom
- certificate / court ruling / letter stating that you are not married or divorced
!!! In some cases, permission to marry before reaching the age of majority is required.
If you change your surname after marriage, a Belarusian passport is valid for 30 days, then it must be changed.
Where to get a certificate confirming that you are not married (and there are no obstacles to marriage)?
If you have a passport of series RR (citizen of the Republic of Belarus for permanent residence outside the country), then the consular department or branch of the Embassy of the Republic of Belarus in the Russian Federation will issue a certificate stating that nothing is preventing your union.
Belarusians living in Russia with a regular internal passport can only obtain a certificate in their homeland. The process takes one day. The price is 35 euros.
If a citizen of Russia is in the territory of the Republic of Belarus and wishes to register a marriage with Belarusian registry offices, he must personally fill out the appropriate application form at the consular department of the Russian Embassy in the Republic of Belarus stating that he is not married. In this case, the authenticity of the citizen's signature must be notarized by a consular official upon presentation of a valid Russian passport.
Please note that the registry offices of the Republic of Belarus require that the certificate be additionally legalized through consular legalization at the Main Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus.
What will happen to citizenship?
Marriage or divorce does not affect the acquisition or termination of Belarusian/Russian citizenship. It is granted at the discretion of the newlyweds and in compliance with the laws of Russia and Belarus. So, in order to get married and stay permanently in Belarus or Russia, it is not necessary to change citizenship.
What citizenship will a child have if the parents have different citizenship?
Parents choose the child's citizenship themselves. According to Belarusian legislation, a child automatically acquires Belarusian citizenship if at least one parent is a citizen of Belarus on the day of the child's birth, regardless of the child's place of birth.
