What a Child Should Know About Posting Photos on the Internet
Photos are an integral part of our lives, Instagram and other social networks are now used by many adults, not to mention children. This is very good for socialization: children can observe each other's lives, leave comments and put likes. Likes and comments are perceived as approval, so the more of them, the better.
But there is also a danger in this. It won't be difficult for intruders to find their victim and gain their trust. Cheating is much easier on the Internet than in reality, and children sometimes value adult "approval" more than the approval of their peers if the adult has authority in the eyes of the child. As a result, attackers can persuade a child to take pictures of himself without clothes or even record on video.
Talk to your children about which photos are acceptable to take and post online, and which are not. Some platforms, such as Instagram, simply won't let nude photos through, just like Tik Tok. The social network Twitter also has such restrictions, but most likely, the photo / video will be deleted only after complaints from other users. But there are no restrictions on platforms such as Telegram, VK and other messengers. That's what criminals use.
Tell the children that minors are not allowed to take videos and photographs of themselves without clothes, post these photos on the Internet or send private messages to other people. This should not be done under any pretext: criminals can offer sweets, money, equipment, anything, depending on the age of the child, involve them in games with dangerous tasks.
If the attacker is a good manipulator, he can even make the child believe that his nude photos are already in the hands of the criminal. In such cases, the pedophile blackmails the child by making these photos publicly available, and to prevent such a development, he needs to send even more photos.
Children are trusting and easily suggestible, so it's important that the most important adults in their lives are their parents. If the child trusts you, then he will tell you about any worries. It is very difficult to deceive a child for whom the most important adults are their parents. We are primarily responsible for the safety of our children.
Teach your child the "underwear rule." This rule is that you can not touch and look at the child in those places that are hidden behind underwear. The exceptions are parents and some doctors. In the case of parents, the child should clearly understand what mom or dad is doing and why, and in the case of doctors, all manipulations should be carried out in the presence of the parent.
Even in the doctor's office, it's important to remember that if the doctor wants to do something beyond what's necessary (why take off your underwear if you come to the pediatrician with a fever and sore throat), you have the right to stop the doctor and disobey his demands.
Sometimes, when children start exploring their bodies, they may want to take photos of themselves without clothes and not post them anywhere. You shouldn't do this either: any photos may fall into the hands of the wrong people and leak onto the Internet. Children can sometimes be very violent, so leaking explicit photos can lead to harassment. Moreover, it is not the person who stole and posted the photos who is being bullied, but the one who is depicted on them.
The law on personal data protection is in force in Belarus. Absolutely no photos can be distributed without consent: This is a violation of the law "On Information, Informatization and Information Protection". If the child's photos were posted online without the parents' consent (and even more so if they were intimate photos), you should file a police report.
