Marrying a foreigner: Turkey
We often receive questions from girls who are planning to get married abroad. Many meet online and later move to conclude the marriage and live near their significant other. But registering a marriage in another country is not an easy matter, and it's better to approach it with all seriousness. To minimize risks, let's try to understand and inform about the necessary documents for concluding a marriage. Forewarned is forearmed.
What documents are required to conclude a marriage?
A citizen of the Republic of Belarus will need to provide documents (important: we provide a general list of documents, for more detailed information, it is necessary to contact the Turkish civil registry authorities, find out the exact list of documents and requirements for legalization of documents).
1. Passport (also a translation of the passport and its notarization will be needed. It is better to do these documents in Turkey).
2. Certificate of absence of registered marriage (the certificate can be obtained from the civil registry office at the place of residence in Belarus). Then you need to contact the General Consulate of the Republic of Belarus in Turkey to issue a certificate for concluding a marriage in Turkish. The list of documents for applying to the General Consulate of the Republic of Belarus:
- passport (as well as copies of all pages of the passport with marks in two copies);
- application;
- original certificate of absence of marriage registration obtained from the civil registry office in the Republic of Belarus (the certificate is valid for 6 months from the date of issue);
- receipt for payment of the consular fee.

The signature of the consular officer and the stamp of the General Consulate on the certificate for concluding a marriage must be certified in any district office of Istanbul province (kaymakamlık) for use in the country for the purpose of concluding a marriage.
3. If you were previously married and are currently divorced, you must present a court decision on divorce, which must also be legalized by affixing the "Apostille" stamp and translated into Turkish and notarized. It is also important to know that in Turkey they do not register a marriage if less than 9 months (300 days) have passed since the dissolution of the previous marriage.
4. A medical certificate obtained from state institutions in Turkey.
5. 6 color photographs (taken no later than 6 months ago).
6. Due to the fact that the passport of a citizen of the Republic of Belarus does not contain information about the citizen's mother, Turkish authorities also require the applicant's birth certificate, which is legalized by affixing the "Apostille" stamp at the Main Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus (translation and notarization is also better to do in Turkey).
If it is necessary to legalize any document by affixing the "Apostille" stamp in Turkey, you must contact the Consulate General of the Republic of Belarus in Turkey with a petition for this service. The document will be sent by the consulate to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus by diplomatic mail for legalization, and then it will be sent back. It should be borne in mind that such a legalization process can last up to three months.
