What to do if you lose your passport abroad?

None of us is immune to unforeseen situations. When going abroad, it's important not to miss anything: clothes, toothbrush, insurance, passport, money. Everything needs to be double-checked. But even responsible people sometimes get confused about routes, forget things, and lose documents. What to do if you lose your passport while abroad?

A document proving your identity is something you really don't want to lose. Even when you're within your own country, losing your passport entails financial and time costs. When you go on a trip or for work, no one would like to find out that their passport is missing while abroad.

What to do if you lose your passport abroad?

The first thing to do is not to panic! Yes, the situation is unpleasant, but not fatal. It's important to double-check all bags, pockets, remember where you could have left the document theoretically. After all possible ways to search for the document have been exhausted, you need to contact the local police and explain the situation. Here, you will need to write a statement about the loss of your passport.

The next important step is to contact the consulate of your country. Here, they will issue you a certificate for returning to your homeland. Or, if you are not in another country as a tourist, but live there permanently, then you can collect documents to apply for a new passport.

What is a Certificate of Return?

If your passport expires abroad or if the document is lost, then you need to apply for a certificate of return — this is a temporary document that replaces the passport. This certificate allows you to return to your homeland and permits you to legally stay in a foreign country. Upon returning to Belarus, you should submit this certificate to the Department of Citizenship and Migration and apply for a new passport.

To obtain a certificate of return to your homeland, you must:

-Have a report with you about the loss or theft of the passport, the same one you will receive from the police.

-Any document confirming your identity. Also, the consulate may send an official request to your homeland to the migration service to establish your identity. But you will need to wait for the response, up to 30 days maximum.

-An application for the issuance of a certificate of return to your homeland.

-A document confirming payment of the consular fee, or an original document exempting you from payment.

    -And two photographs measuring 3.5×4.5.

Of course, you shouldn't lose your passport, but it's still better to be on the safe side and be mentally prepared for any situation. Before traveling, remember simple rules that will help you get out of a difficult situation faster in case of force majeure.

When packing your bag, it's a good idea to have copies of your main documents with you. It's best to scan a copy of your passport and send it to yourself by email, or to the email of someone close to you. It's better to put your driver's license or other identity documents and your passport in different bags.

    Addition:

If a Belarusian woman gives birth to a child abroad and wants to return with him to Belarus, then she must also obtain a certificate of return to her homeland by presenting the original birth certificate of the child at the embassy of the Republic of Belarus abroad. The child's birth certificate must be apostilled and have an original translation into Russian (or Belarusian) and be notarized.

No matter what happens, it's important to remember that we live in a modern world where there is an internet connection and the ability to call the necessary services on every corner.
