    Leaving Belarus. What kind of insurance is needed (including COVID-19 insurance)?

    When traveling to other countries, it is important to feel protected, especially during the coronavirus pandemic. To protect yourself from troubles during your trip, you can take out an accident insurance policy. We will tell you about the possible types of contracts, how to get insured against COVID-19, and where to go if an insured event occurs.

    What insurance options are available?

    - an option that provides for payment of expenses for emergency medical care;

    - an option that, in addition to payment for medical care, provides for additional monetary compensation.

    Usually, these options are marked by insurance companies with the letters A (only payment of expenses) and B (payment of expenses + compensation).

    The insurance covers the medical facility's expenses for providing emergency medical care to the victim. It is important to understand that we are talking about situations where there is a threat to life or acute illnesses (poisoning, injuries, infectious and viral diseases). In this case, emergency care is provided free of charge, but you must present your policy to the doctor or call the insurance company, which guarantees payment.

    How to get insured against coronavirus COVID-19?

    If you enter into a health insurance contract against accidents and illnesses, it is also valid in case of coronavirus infection COVID-19. This rule applies to all voluntary insurance contracts concluded from March 23, 2020.

    However, some insurance companies offer COVID-19 insurance as an additional service. Therefore, before entering into a contract, we recommend checking whether coronavirus protection is included in the list of accidents of the insurance company you have applied to.

    Where to get insurance and how much does it cost?

    You can find the list of insurance organizations whose activities are approved by the Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Belarus (as of January 27, 2021) here.

    The cost of insurance depends on the number of days spent abroad, the country, the amount of insurance protection, and the number of people to be insured.

    The cost is usually calculated: from 1 to 4 currency units = one day of stay. Payment is made in the currency of the country in which you conclude the health insurance contract (for Belarus – in Belarusian rubles at the rate of the National Bank on the day of payment).

    When insuring, for example, for travel to the United States or Canada, the insured amount is set at no less than 90,000 USD. When staying in these countries for 20 days, one person will need to pay about 40 units of account for health insurance.

    What can be included in the insurance?

    If you know the purpose of your trip in advance, add additional options to the basic policy.

    For example:

    - if you are going to the sea, add assistance for sunburn;

    - if you plan to go skiing or surfing, add insurance for active recreation and sports. Be sure to indicate all the activities you plan to engage in. Don't forget: riding jet skis and horses, and banana boats also count as active recreation;

    - if you suffer from chronic diseases (for example, stomach ulcers), add assistance for exacerbation of chronic diseases.

    Remember: insurers do not reimburse expenses if the incident was caused by alcohol intoxication.

    What to do if an insured event occurs?

    You can contact the service company representing the interests of your insurance company in the country of stay using the phone numbers or addresses specified in the insurance contract and get detailed advice on how to proceed and where to go for help.

    How do they pay out insurance?

    There are two options for insurance payout: the insurance company pays the medical institution directly, or you pay on the spot, and the insurance company reimburses you for the expenses. Check with your insurance company in advance how to properly arrange medical documents abroad for reimbursement of expenses in Belarus after returning.
