How to get a job in Lithuania
Working abroad is becoming increasingly attractive to more and more Belarusians. Every day, the "Hotline" of the Public Association "Club of Business Women" for safe travel and stay abroad and combating human trafficking receives calls from people who want to find employment outside Belarus. Lithuania is among the top 5 popular countries. Due to the increase in unemployment here, vacancies are first available to Lithuanians or EU citizens. If none of them respond within 30 days, the employer has the right to invite immigrants and citizens of other countries. A vacancy that is planned to be filled with a foreigner in the future can be found on specialized websites or in print sources. You can also contact an agency that hires workers. And here the main thing is not to miss the moment. Your task is to make every effort so that the potential employer chooses you.

The next step will be confirming the employer's consent to hire a foreign national. If both parties express interest, the employer arranges a work permit in Lithuania for a specific foreigner. He sends a letter of inquiry to the labor exchange, attaching documents:
– a statement that a foreign national will be invited to the territory of the Republic of Lithuania for work;
– a copy of the passport;
– a document (extract from the work book) confirming that the applicant has worked in the declared specialty for two years over the past three years;
– a copy of the diploma of education or qualification (stamped with the international "Apostille" stamp);
– if available, additional documents on completion of advanced training courses or a diploma of graduation from a Lithuanian educational institution.
For employment in certain specialties, these documents are not enough. For example, those applying for vacancies in the field of medicine or education need not only to provide a diploma, but also to go through the procedure of nostrification (confirm their qualifications in the country).
An application for a work permit in the Republic of Lithuania is considered within two months from the date of receipt of the application at the Lithuanian Labor Exchange. If the application is approved, an employment contract is sent to the labor exchange for registration and approval. The employment contract is concluded in writing in Lithuanian and Russian/Belarusian. It must specify duties, salary amount and payment terms, place of work, working hours, and the start date of work. Carefully study the terms of the employment contract before signing and traveling to the country of employment.
After submitting all documents to the Lithuanian Labor Exchange, the issue of issuing a permit to engage in labor activity is resolved.
A work permit in Lithuania is valid for two years, but it can be extended after expiration. If you plan to go for seasonal work, the permit will be issued for up to six months. There are exceptions when Belarusians do not need a permit to work in Lithuania. This applies to athletes, volunteers, scientists, university professors, religious officials, and managers of foreign companies.
A foreigner can work only for the employer who issued the permit. Do you need to change your occupation? No problem, for this you need to obtain a new permit from a new employer.
To work in Lithuania, a permit alone is not enough. It is necessary to obtain
a national work visa (type D) for a year. If you are going to work for more than 1 year, you need a temporary residence permit.
IMPORTANT! Since September 1, 2019, a foreigner can submit documents at the Embassy for temporary residence in the Republic of Lithuania if he:
– retains the right to citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania or is of Lithuanian origin;
– is intended to be transferred to another position in the same company.
Other categories of persons can submit documents for consideration of the issuance of a temporary residence permit in the Republic of Lithuania only in Lithuania. More details can be found on the
website of the Migration Department under the Ministry of the Interior.
