How not to become a victim of employment

The number of people wishing to go abroad for work has increased in Belarus. However, often seduced by high earnings, people simply do not notice how they fall into the trap of scammers, lose a large amount of money or, worse, fall into labor slavery. Experts from the "hotline for safe departure and stay abroad" of the NGO "Club of Business Women" will explain how to recognize scammers when applying for a job abroad.

    1. Be vigilant

Think realistically. Avoid offers of easy and big earnings. They may seem tempting, but in fact they will not correspond to reality. Working in another country is only possible with a work visa. Do not fall for tempting and short-term part-time jobs on a tourist visa. Neither a tourist, nor a cultural, nor any other type of visa gives the right to work, so you can be deported from the country at any time for illegal activity.

    2. Suspicious phrases
    • The group has been formed, there is only one place left. Decide quickly.
    • Come and we will sort out the formalities with the contract on the spot.
    • There will be no second opportunity, do not miss your chance.
    • Work experience and having a diploma are not necessary at all, the main thing is desire.
    • First come, and then we will arrange a work visa.
    3. Trust, but verify

When going to work abroad, make sure that the employer's company is a legal institution. Ask to show a license to carry out the advertised activity and the registration certificate number. The list of licensees engaged in employment activities outside Belarus can be found on the website of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Belarus. If the documents are not shown, this should alert you. Without a license, the activity is prohibited. You have the right to know all the nuances of employment "from and to". Find out everything down to the last detail: what the working hours, salary, travel and living conditions, medical and social insurance arrangements will be. If detailed information is refused, be sure that you are being deceived.

    4. Manipulation with the contract

Draw up the employment contract on site in Belarus, not after arriving in another country. It is important that the documents are in Russian or Belarusian. Do not rush to sign the contract immediately or blindly; first, carefully study the contract. Study all the points in detail, and if you have any questions, consult specialists. Never sign a contract with unclear conditions such as: «and other types of work», «all types of work at the employer's request».

    5. Money upfront

If they demand payment from you for employment before concluding an agreement on assistance in finding employment, it means they are scammers.

    6. Without unnecessary questions

Scammers don't care about your professional skills. They take everyone who responds. And the more there are, the better, because scammers demand payment for their services upfront. But what kind of job can you get so easily? A real employer will always be interested in your professional qualities, experience, and education documents.

    7. Before you go:
    • Leave copies of all documents and information about your future employer with your relatives.
    • Agree on a «code» phrase with your loved ones, hearing which your family will understand that you need help. The phrase should be everyday, not suspicious.
    • Learn the phone number and address of the consular offices of the Republic of Belarus in the country of residence.
    • Buy tickets in both directions, even if you are going for a long time. It is desirable that the departure date be open.
    • Seek advice on safe departure and stay abroad.
