Belarusians in China had their documents taken away and were held in an unknown house for two weeks.

About the events that are happening now in China, only... well, there are probably no such people left who haven't heard the scary word "coronavirus". In any case, everyone in Belarus definitely knows that it's better to postpone trips to China.

However, there are people who were in the country before the epidemic began. The hotline of the Public Association "Club of Business Women" for safe travel and stay abroad and combating human trafficking 8-801-201-5555 and 113 is actively receiving calls from relatives of the "affected". We put the word "affected" in quotes and will now explain in detail why.

None of our compatriots who went to China to work or travel expected to be held hostage to the situation. According to relatives who contacted our hotline, foreigners in the Chinese city of Wuhan were taken directly from their workplace, taken to an unknown place, had their documents and mobile phones seized. However, Belarusians were allowed to call their relatives before their phone was taken and report the purpose of all this.

These are measures that required immediate decision-making. Two weeks later, when the incubation period of the infection was over, the documents and phone were returned to the owners. All victims were helped to return to their homeland. Everyone who worked was paid their salary. Those who had just arrived with the aim of finding employment had to look for money independently through relatives.

To repeat, this information is taken from the words of the relatives of the affected.

And here's what Brest resident Irina, who is currently in China, has to say about this:

"I'm currently in China, on Hainan Island. I haven't heard about people being taken to villages and having their documents taken away. We don't have such things here. Quarantine was imposed. I have many friends in different cities of China and everything is fine with everyone. Work was stopped. Some were not allowed to leave their homes every day due to quarantine, but for safety reasons! At the same time, many even had their salaries retained."

In China, I work in the tourism industry. Since February 1, tourism has stopped operating. All tourists were evacuated and the city became deserted. All city residents were required to wear masks and have their temperature taken at every turn: when entering a cafe, a store, or driving into a courtyard. Later, all cafes, bars, large shopping centers closed, only supermarkets remained open. A quarantine was imposed in the city; only one family member was allowed to leave the courtyard and only once every two days to buy groceries. The quarantine lasted about two weeks. Currently, the situation in the city is good, there are five remaining cases and they are recovering. On February 23, the quarantine was officially lifted in the city. Shopping centers reopened, checkpoints were removed, and the city is slowly coming back to life."

Any epidemic is an emergency situation. It takes us by surprise and requires immediate correct decisions. The correct decision in the first case was isolation and waiting out the incubation period of the disease. Although at first glance, it may seem that Belarusians were treated unlawfully. Safety measures are not always clear. But we must understand: all this is done for the safety of everyone. In turn, our country is also taking security measures. Many Chinese students study in Belarusian educational institutions. Now they are actively returning from vacation to Belarus. Quarantine facilities have been organized for them, where they stay for two weeks (during the incubation period of the infection).

Currently, no cases of coronavirus infection have been registered in Belarus.
