What to do if your documents are stolen abroad?
Unfortunately, theft of documents is increasingly becoming a reason for обращения. Not everyone knows what to do in such a situation and where to turn. The main thing is not to panic. We have previously written about how to prepare for a trip to minimize risks (you can read about this
here). Today we will look at what algorithm of actions can be useful if you lose/have your documents stolen abroad.
In this article, we looked at current actions for a European country (a specific case in Germany was analyzed). If you have lost your documents in other countries (not in the European Union), call the hotline – our employees will help you find a solution.
What to do if your documents are stolen in Germany?
1. The first step is to go to the police, write a report about the theft or loss with details. In return, you will be given a certificate of passport loss.
2. Then you need to take 2 passport photos – on a light background, without headgear, 3.4 x 4.5 cm.
3. Go to the embassy or consulate of the Republic of Belarus. You need to have a certificate of passport loss with you (the police gave it to you), 2 photos, money (in Germany this amount is about 20 euros) and preferably copies of your passport or other documents – before leaving, be sure to make copies of important documents and keep them separate from the documents themselves! This way, embassy staff will be able to establish your identity as soon as possible. If you don't have any documents, it will take several days to establish your identity (that's why it's important to find out the address and phone number of the consulate of your country of citizenship before leaving for abroad, because sometimes there is no embassy of the Republic of Belarus in the country, and you need to contact another embassy).
The embassy will give you a certificate of return to the Republic of Belarus, which will be valid for 6 months. With this document, you will be able to leave the country and enter Belarus. Meanwhile, your passport will be considered invalid.
4. Within a month after arrival, you need to go to the department of citizenship and migration at your place of registration (residence) and submit the certificate of return. After that, you will be able to get a new passport.
You will be able to restore all the lost documents only after returning to the Republic of Belarus.

Attention! The return certificate is valid only for returning to the Republic of Belarus. The certificate does not grant the right to reside in the territory of a foreign State. It is recommended to make an appointment in advance at the Embassy of your country of citizenship (in Germany, there are embassies of the Republic of Belarus in Berlin or at the Consulate General in Munich):
- Berlin: tel. 030 536 359 36, from 14.00 to 17.00 or E-mail: germany.consul@mfa.gov.by
- Munich: tel. 089 649 570 319 or E-mail: germany.muenchen@mfa.gov.by
When going abroad, try to do it consciously. Prepare copies of the necessary documents, inform your relatives where you are going (address), and plan an emergency response. This way your trip will be much quieter.
Calls and written requests are temporarily not accepted.
