Marrying a Russian citizen: what the procedure looks like and what documents are needed
If you have decided to tie the knot with a foreign citizen, it is better to approach this procedure responsibly. When it comes to obtaining official status (husband/wife), assistance in preparing the necessary documents will not hurt. Let's look at what this procedure looks like and what documents need to be prepared.
If you are a citizen of Belarus, to marry a citizen of the Russian Federation, you need to submit the following documents to the registry office:
- an application from the bride and groom;
- a receipt as proof of payment of the state fee;
- passports (you need to clarify with the registry office which passport the citizen of the Russian Federation should present - national or international);
- a certificate that the foreign citizen is not currently married. It is obtained from the registry office at the place of residence and only the original needs to be provided. In some registry offices in Belarus, it is also required that this certificate be legalized (this means that it must have an APOSTILLE stamp. It can be obtained from the justice authorities in Russia). You can clarify this information at the registry office where you intend to apply. Usually, the validity period of such a certificate is 6 months. If there is no possibility to return to Russia for this document, contact the embassy of the Russian Federation in the Republic of Belarus. The certificate obtained at the embassy must be legalized by consular legalization at the Main Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus (GKU MFA of the Republic of Belarus, Minsk, K. Marx St., 37A);
- if a foreign citizen was previously married, you need to submit a document on divorce (or the death of the spouse). These documents must be obtained and legalized only in the territory of the Russian Federation.
Also, when submitting documents to the registry office, your future spouse must have temporary residence in the territory of the Republic of Belarus registered with the migration service. We wrote about how to obtain it
here.
Please note: currently, the Russian Embassy is temporarily not working in all areas, so check the information you need first by phone (for example, whether they will issue the above-mentioned certificate): + 375 (17) 222 49 85.
