Behind the doors of harems: what women need to know about the "oriental tale"
Getting to the United Arab Emirates is not difficult: buy a tour, get a visa, and you'll be greeted by one of the most comfortable airports in the world. It's one thing if
you come to a Muslim country on vacation, and quite another if you come to live: to work or get married. But not all love stories end happily. Especially when the main characters of this story are people of Muslim and Christian faiths. Today, experts from the NGO "Business Women's Club" will tell you what women who dream of an "oriental fairy tale" should pay attention to so that it doesn't turn into a nightmare.
Who is she – the Arab woman?

A woman in the Arab Emirates is a completely special person. Here people dress according to the precepts of the Quran. Strangers can see her feet, hands, and face. And for representatives of especially religious families, only their eyes are visible from under the black veil. A woman here is not powerless: she can study, work, and drive a car. But exposing her body on the street and marrying a foreigner is tantamount to madness. Arab women are forbidden to marry a person of a different faith, as they can be expelled from the country for this. Men are allowed to marry Muslim, Christian, and Jewish women. But in this case, the girl will not receive citizenship. In mixed marriages, children will be Muslims and will stay with their father in case of divorce.
Always say "Yes!"
Relations between partners in the UAE are regulated by Sharia, the main family code. Families live according to a standard way of life: women run the household and raise children, while men work to provide for the family. Representatives of the fairer sex are not allowed to work; they only dispose of their husband's earnings as they see fit. A woman in marriage does not know the word "No"; only "Yes" should be heard in relation to her spouse. He is the head of the family, all decisions are made by him.
"If I were a sultan, I would have three wives..."
If you are seriously thinking about marrying a Muslim, prepare for the fact that being the one and only will not work. According to the Quran, a man can have up to four spouses. No matter how many wives a man has, the first marriage is the most important, and the first wife is the "eldest". In order to enter into a subsequent marriage, the husband must ask the permission of the first spouse. If everything is resolved amicably, then the spouses can live together under the same roof. If the wives live separately, then the husband is obliged to provide equal conditions for each of them, to give gifts, attention, and jewelry equally.
Several wives are the privilege of sheikhs and very wealthy people. Only 5% of the country's citizens can afford to support two wives or more. To feed all his families, a man must be wealthy. Without proof of financial security, he will not be able to officially marry.
Before the wedding – "no way"!

Extramarital relations are a criminal offense in the UAE. Men and women, citizens of the Emirates, visitors, Muslims, and non-Muslims will be equally punished for it. For migrants, such a crime also means deportation after imprisonment. Even rape victims who come to the police to report a crime can go to jail.
When a woman goes to a women's clinic or gives birth in a UAE hospital, she must present a marriage certificate along with copies of her passport and visa. If there is no document, the doctor will inform the police. After discharge, the police will arrest the woman in labor and deport her after a while. The child will be considered the property of the father, and the mother will be able to take the child out with the written consent of the father. The same rule applies to pregnant women: they will not leave the country without their father's written consent.
If a pregnant woman is not married, then she urgently needs to get married, or, if she is an unmarried foreign woman, return to her country. Abortions are prohibited unless there are medical complications and medical indications. Therefore, if a man does not want to get married, it remains to travel to another country to have an abortion or give birth to a child outside the UAE. It is dangerous for an unmarried woman to return to the UAE after giving birth: the authorities may launch an investigation. And if it is established that the child was conceived in the Emirates, the woman will be imprisoned.
"It didn't work out, it didn't work out"
A man, wishing to divorce his wife, can at any time say «go away» three times or pronounce the word «divorce». After that, the divorce procedure begins. The woman leaves the house in what she was wearing, for this reason she always wears all the gifted gold on herself. In practice, divorces initiated by husbands are extremely rare. After completing the divorce, the husband supports the former wife and child until the age of 7-9. Upon reaching this age, the wife leaves the house, and the child remains in the father's care. Divorce in the UAE and other Muslim countries is considered a disgrace.
A foreign woman has the right to file for divorce only after ten years. She has the right to do this if:
– the husband does not provide for her well enough (courts satisfy such applications most often);
– he has become impotent;
– he has left for more than four months and stopped communicating with the family;
– he suffers from a mental disorder.
The spouse must prove the specified fact by bringing witnesses or providing certificates to the court. For other reasons, it will be difficult for a woman to get a divorce, because courts often make decisions biasedly, supporting the husband's side until the last. There is no Family Code in the UAE, so in controversial matters, judges rely on Sharia law.
