Is registration required when vacationing abroad?
Summer is the season for vacations. People travel to different parts of the world to relax. Recently, the hotline for safe travel abroad of the NGO "Club of Business Women" has received many questions related to registration at the place of stay. After all, when you go to a certain hotel for vacation, there are usually no questions, since the hotels in which you intend to stay throughout your vacation are responsible for registering tourists. BUT! If they did not ask for your passport on the first day, be sure to clarify whether you have been registered or not.
But what to do if you decide to go on vacation as a "rough sleeper"? Where to go to register if you rent a place to stay?
Let's look at several popular holiday destinations: Montenegro, Croatia, Bulgaria and China.
So, you have arrived at your destination. What to do next? Before going to enjoy your well-deserved vacation, it is worth registering first.
Montenegro

In Montenegro, all foreigners are required to register with the tourist office within 24 hours of arrival, paying a tourist fee. You can pay the tourist tax at the bank or post office, stating the purpose of the payment and showing your passport. With the payment receipt, address of residence and passport, you go to the tourist office.
If you decide not to pay the tourist tax, you may be fined at the border by law. The same applies to registration.
What if you want to travel around Montenegro? By law, you must register again each time.
Croatia
In Croatia, you must also register within 24 hours at a police station or tourist office. If you stay in a hotel or private apartments, then the hotel managers or apartment owners must do this for you by asking for your passport.
Bulgaria

What about registration in Bulgaria?
The law states that upon arrival in Bulgaria, a foreigner must register with the Ministry of Interior within five days, otherwise there is a fine.
What does the law say?
(3) Within 5 days after providing shelter, an individual or legal entity that has provided shelter to a foreigner must notify the administrative control service for foreigners or the district police department at their place of residence in writing about this circumstance, and provide the surname, first name and patronymic, date of birth, citizenship, and number and series of the foreigner's identity document.
(4) A person engaged in hotel activities or their employee, upon accommodating a foreigner, is obliged to immediately register them in a special register. Information about accommodated foreigners is provided by this person daily before 06.00 am to the administrative control service for foreigners or to the district police department at the location of the hotel.
Conclusion: registration is carried out by property owners, and we can enjoy our vacation.
China

In China, as in the above-mentioned countries, a foreigner must register within 24 hours in urban areas, and within 72 hours in rural areas. Otherwise, the fine can be significant!
Where can this be done? At the police station. However, it is worth remembering that the station must be the one to which your accommodation is assigned. Here, it is important to remember that regardless of whether it is a holiday in China or not, you must submit your registration documents within 24 hours. However, the registration paper itself may be issued to you on another day.
It is necessary to remember that in China, even hotels do not always register, so insist on your registration. When registering at a hotel, you will обязательно be given a registration slip, but it will not be suitable for renewing your visa if you suddenly need it. You still need the document from the police station.
As for registration in a private apartment, it is more complicated and you need to find out at the police station directly in the city where you are staying. But the main thing you need to have is a certificate of residence, which can be obtained from the housing office, and a rental agreement for the apartment.
As in Montenegro, you must register in each city you intend to visit for more than 24 hours.
Registration is free!
Having considered four countries, we can conclude that registration is always required, no matter where you stay. And a little piece of advice – don’t forget to ask the hotel manager or landlord if they have registered you or not. Have a pleasant stay!
